“Are all adults playfully challenged?” - when I’m away from home, I feel like I can play a lot more. When I’m at home, I feel the pressure of things that need to be done. Is play, still play if you have to schedule it in? Is plan still play if it’s for 5mins, 15mins, 30mins.
When I think of play, I think of freedom, experimenting, being fluid.
What would life be like if more adults embraced play?
I didn't include this in the piece but I think it's super interesting. I was listening to Martha Beck's podcast, The Gathering Room, and in one episode she talks about "dedicated play" and she says: "To gain mastery, you can do it faster with dedicated play. Normally it takes about 400 iterations of a skill or an idea before you form a new neuron connection. UNLESS you’re playing - with dedicated play, it takes about only 10 iterations to for a new neuron circuit/connection." I mean, if that's not a case to play more, I can't come up with anything more compelling! Maybe that's why children are so good and quick at learning, because it's more like play. The older they get the harder it becomes because there is nothing fun or playful about middle school math!! 😂
Yesssss! Way to jump into play and the full embodiment of joy! Having the added influence of your kids will heighten everything for you. Can’t wait to see what you come up with :)
